Cassandra Lewis Slattery

Writer & Consultant

I'm an award-winning writer serving select nonprofit organizations.

My background offers years of communications and social service experience. I completed The University of Iowa’s Irish Writing Program in Dublin, Ireland and earned an MA and an MFA in Writing from New College of California and a BA in Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.

I consult on issues relating to both the development and program sides of organizations. This broad approach promotes the connection between an organization's vision and its important day-to-day work. My philosophy is to identify an organization's strengths and bridge them with goals that fulfill the organization's core values and mission.

On the development side, I have devised communications, marketing, and fundraising strategies, including messaging for multiple audiences, social media techniques, style guide development and implementation, ads, email streams that build audience engagement, website content, in addition to writing project and grant proposals. I have also helped organizations with branding, creating new mission and vision statements and strategic plans.

On the program side, I have worked with high-risk youth,  inmates, formerly incarcerated adults, homeless individuals, and other trauma survivors. I have created and implemented program proposals and curricula in the areas of teen and adult literacy, environmental education, poverty reduction and workforce development.

I was recently commissioned to write The NYC K-12 Resource Guide: RRR You Ready?about environmental literacy, which is available on the NYC.gov website.

My former clients inspired me to writeLiteracy Is Power: How To Change The World Kit, a book for everyone who would like to give back and help make a difference in someone’s life.  If you can read this sentence, you can become a literacy leader.

The book describes my "literacy triage" teaching strategy that yielded a 100% success rate during my tenure as Director of Education at a nonprofit in New York that serves homeless adults. It also offers fundraising leads and instructions on how to write grant proposals for organizations interested in launching or expanding their literacy programs.
